dis)connect, 2019

I was interested in exploring the different ways people can be physically/mentally connected and or disconnected when being intimate. For this video installation, abstract bodies entangled in each other were projected through layers of fabric. Audio is from interviews I conducted and was looped while the video was playing.

Skyluck, 2019

This project documents my family’s journey from Vietnam to Hong Kong aboard the Skyluck when escaping as refugees after the Vietnam war. It touches upon generational memory through my family’s immigration experience and the ways that this affects my own sense of identity.

Waves shown on the walls of our home symbolize this experience always being a part of us. Video ends with me trying to piece my family back together.

Sticks, 2019

This project analyzes how certain asian cultures have either been passed down or lost due to my family’s assimilation to American culture. I ended the video with a clip of the screen split four ways, our disembodied faces somehow becoming one single being--eating. By doing so, I wanted to highlight the ways that this ritual of eating, brings us all together. Despite the generational dissonance, we are united by the parts of us that come from those before us.
